Do endowments predict the location of production? Evidence from national and international data
نویسندگان
چکیده
Examining the relationship between factor endowments and production patterns using data from Japanese prefectures and from OECD nations, we find evidence of substantial production indeterminacy. Regressions of outputs on endowments yield prediction errors six to 30 times larger for goods traded relatively freely than for non-traded goods. We argue that a compelling explanation for these results is the existence of more goods than factors in the presence of trade costs. If so, regressions of trade or output on endowments have weak theoretical foundations. Furthermore, since errors are largest in data sets where trade costs are small, we explain why the common methodology of imputing trade barriers from regression residuals has produced counterintuitive results. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. International Capital Movements and Relative Wages: Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing Industries
In this paper, we use a multi-sector specific factors model with international capital mobility to examine the effects of globalization on the skill premium in U.S. manufacturing industries. This model allows us to identify two channels through which globalization affects relative wages: effects of international capital flows transmitted through changes in interest rates, and effects of international...
متن کاملCrack Tip Constraint for Anisotropic Sheet Metal Plate Subjected to Mode-I Fracture
On the ground of manufacturing, sheet metal parts play a key role as they cover about half of the production processes. Sheet metals are commonly obtained from rolling and forming processes which causes misalignment of micro structure resulting obvious anisotropic characteristics and micro cracks. Presence of micro cracks poses serious attention, when stresses at the tip reach to the critical v...
متن کاملO n the similarity of country endowments
We study the production side of the Heckscher–Ohlin model empirically. The evidence we present suggests that the endowments of countries around the world are too dissimilar for all countries to be able to produce the same set of goods. In contrast, the endowments of the rich OECD countries are sufficiently similar, so that these countries do not have to specialize in different subsets of goods....
متن کاملNational Curriculum: What Do International Experiences Say?
The conceptions, practices and efforts of some education systems in ten countries and four continents of the world, in area of national curriculum, have been reviewed and analyzed in this inquiry to represent a brief look of their experiences and obtain some guidelines for delineating and developing national curriculum. The methodology in this inquiry has been descriptive and analytical researc...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Agricultural Training Centers’ Curriculum in Promoting Adoption of Agricultural Technologies: Evidence from Small-Scale Potato Farmers in Nyandarua County, Kenya
Agricultural Training Centres (ATCs) promote crop and livestock development by providing extension information to farmers and serving as models of improved crop and livestock husbandry practices. Although potato farmers in Nyandarua County were trained on potato production technologies, their average yield was ≤16 tonnes per hectare compared to the national potential of 30 tonnes. This study th...
